Overview

## Guttering & Downpipes: What You Need to Know

### What it is
Your gutters collect rainwater from the roof and the downpipes carry it to the drain. When the system works, you don't notice it. When it doesn't, water ends up down your brickwork, around your foundations and sometimes inside. I fit new guttering and downpipes and deal with the blocked or broken sections behind most overflows.

### Who it's for
Homeowners with gutters that drip at the joints, sag between brackets, overflow in heavy rain, or have cracked and faded with age. It's also for anyone having fascias replaced who wants the whole roof edge renewed together.

### When you need it
Watch for water spilling over the edge during rain, drips from joints, green staining or moss on walls under the gutter, gutters pulling away from the fascia, and puddles or splashback at ground level where a downpipe should be draining.

### Why it pays to get it right
Gutters need the right fall towards the outlets, secure brackets on sound timber and properly connected downpipes. Fitting new gutter on rotten fascias, or at the wrong fall, simply moves the problem. I check the boards and the whole run before quoting.

The cost of waiting

## What Happens if It's Left
Gutter problems are easy to ignore because they only show themselves when it rains. The damage builds quietly.

### Common mistakes

- Resealing leaking joints year after year on brittle old gutter.
- Fitting new gutters onto rotten fascia boards.
- Ignoring a blocked downpipe and assuming the gutter is the problem.
- Over-tightening or under-supporting runs so they sag between brackets.

### Damp walls
Overflowing water soaks brickwork, which can lead to damp patches, mould and damaged render or paint inside.

### Rotting fascias
Water sitting against or behind the gutter speeds up rot in timber boards.

### Foundation and ground issues
Water dumped at the base of a wall rather than into the drain can affect paths, patios and the ground around your home.

### Frost damage
Saturated brickwork is more likely to crack and spall when it freezes.

My process

## Five Clear Steps

- Step 1
### Free inspection
I check the gutter runs, joints, outlets, downpipes and the fascias they're fixed to.

- Step 2
### Fixed written quote
One price for the work needed, whether that's new sections, full replacement or clearing blockages.

- Step 3
### Remove and clear
Old gutter comes down and blocked downpipes are cleared so water can flow.

- Step 4
### Fit and set the fall
New gutter is fitted with a proper fall to the outlets and downpipes connected securely.

- Step 5
### Test and clear up
The system is checked, the site is left tidy and old materials are taken away.

Guarantee: Guttering is quoted as part of the job. My company guarantees apply to renewals of tiled roofs, uPVC fascias and soffits, and EPDM flat roofs.

Fixed quote for the agreed work.

In detail

## Guttering & Downpipes Explained

### Going the extra mile on blockages
Often an overflowing gutter isn't a gutter problem at all: the downpipe is blocked. One customer in GU17 described me unblocking a downpipe "grabbing chunks of muck with his arm down the drain, soaked to the skin in the pouring rain" while fitting new guttering and fixing a loose slate. Finding the real cause is part of the job.

### Getting the fall right
Gutters need a slight, consistent slope towards each outlet. Too little and water sits in the gutter; too much at one end and it overflows. On long runs, outlets may be positioned so water doesn't have to travel too far.

### Profiles and colours
Domestic guttering comes in a few common profiles, such as half-round and square, in colours including black, white and brown. Where a house is semi-detached or terraced, matching the neighbouring profile keeps the connection neat.

### Combined with fascias and soffits
Because gutters are fixed to the fascias, it's often most cost-effective to renew them together. If your fascias are rotten, new gutters won't hold properly, so I check both before quoting.

### Looking after your gutters
Once new guttering is fitted, the main job is keeping it clear. Leaves, moss washed off the roof and debris from nearby trees collect at outlets and in downpipes. Checking them after autumn and after heavy storms helps prevent overflows. If you notice water spilling over during rain, it's worth getting it looked at before damp shows inside.

If your gutter problems are coming from the roof itself, such as moss-covered tiles shedding debris or felt at the eaves that no longer drains into the gutter, I'll point it out and explain what can be done, so you're not just treating the symptom.

### Why homeowners choose Justin
I'm Justin Wigmore and I run J Wigmore Roofing Ltd on my own. There's no sales visit followed by a different crew: the person who inspects your roof is the person who quotes it, carries out the work and clears up afterwards. I've been listed on Checkatrade for 16 years with a 10/10 rating from 408 reviews, and the same themes come up again and again: excellent communication, daily updates, turning up when I say I will, a clean and tidy site every day, and clear, transparent pricing.

Every job is priced as a fixed quote after a free inspection. I hold £1 million public liability insurance, and payment is by BACS (preferred), cash or cheque.

### Guttering & Downpipes across Aldershot and nearby towns
I'm based in Aldershot and regularly work across Farnborough, Ash and Ash Vale, Farnham and its surrounding villages, Fleet, Blackwater and Hawley, Godalming, Guildford and Odiham. Housing across North East Hampshire and West Surrey ranges from Victorian terraces and inter-war semis to post-war estates and modern homes with garages and extensions, so every roof is assessed on its own merits rather than priced from a list.

### Before you get in touch
It helps to know roughly where the problem is, how long you've noticed it and whether water is getting inside. Photos taken from the ground are useful but not essential. Use the form below or call me, and I'll arrange a free inspection at a time that suits you. There's no obligation, and you'll get a fixed written quote so you can decide in your own time.

FAQ

## Guttering & Downpipes Questions

### How much does new guttering cost?
It depends on the length of the runs, number of downpipes and access. I don't publish prices; you'll get a fixed quote after a free inspection.

### How long does it take?
Most domestic guttering jobs are quick. I'll confirm the timescale when I quote.

### Can you just fix a leaking joint?
Yes, if the gutter is otherwise in good order. If it's brittle and failing throughout, I'll tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it.

### Do you clear blocked downpipes?
Yes, I clear blockages as part of guttering work so the whole system drains.

### Is guttering guaranteed?
My company guarantees cover renewals of tiled roofs, uPVC fascias and soffits and EPDM flat roofs. Repairs are not guaranteed.

### Do you cover Blackwater and Hawley?
Yes, along with Aldershot, Farnborough, Fleet and the surrounding area.

### Can you come out when my gutter is overflowing?
I don't run a 24-hour or out-of-hours call-out service. If you have a leak or storm damage, get in touch during normal working hours and I'll arrange to come and look as soon as I can.

### How do I pay?
Payment is by BACS bank transfer (preferred), cash or cheque. I don't take card payments.
